Amy Jo Johnson (born October 6, 1970) is an actress and entertainer. She was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA and her most notable roles have been those of Kimberly Ann Hart on the television series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and of Julie Emrick on the college drama series Felicity.

Biography

In her early life, Johnson became interested in gymnastics and, after training for years, decided to aim for the Olympics. She eventually reached Class One - the highest status in gymnastics - and participated in competitions hosted both in the United States and in Europe, but was forced to abandon her career as a professional gymnast due to a severe injury.

At the age of 18, she left her home town, Cape Cod, and moved to New York, in order to pursue her acting career. She attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute (see Lee Strasberg) and the American Musical and Acting Academy. When Johnson felt comfortable with her skills, she left for Los Angeles to audition for her first part.

Her gymnastics background was a clear advantage for her in being chosen for the role of Kimberly Ann Hart in the Power Rangers series (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), in its first 3 seasons 1993-1995. The series achieved unexpected success and Johnson had a fair share of media exposure, both as the character of Kimberly Hart and as herself. After her character left the series, she went on to star in the indie film Susie Q in 1996. In 1997 she participated in the NBC's adaptation of Lois Duncan's novel Killing Mr. Griffin, and also played a bulimic gymnast in the movie Perfect Body. She also reprised her role as Kimberly Hart for perhaps the last time in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, as her character was turned evil after being sacrified to Divatox's fiancee, Maligore.

In 1998, she played the part of a vampire in the cult indie movie Cold Hearts. Soon after, she was invited to play the second most notable role of her acting career: Julie Emrick, a college freshman who becomes the best friend of the lead actress of the Warner Brothers series Felicity. She was in the series for two and a half years.

Her character in the series was originally cast as a dancer, but Johnson managed to convince the producers to turn the role into that of a singer and guitarist, which eventually lead her to being able to play a song of her own composition, entitled Puddle of Grace. The song was added to the show's official soundtrack. Her talent in music also lead her to star in the movie Sweetwater: A True Rock Story, a biography about the life of Nansi Nevins, lead singer from the band that opened the Woodstock festival, Sweetwater.

Johnson then took roles in a number of indie movies, namely Interstate 60, Pursuit of Happiness (in her sole nude scene) and Hard Ground. She also had a role in the final season of the television crime drama The Division.

As of 2001, she has dedicated herself mostly to music (after her fellow MMPR co-star Thuy Trang's untimely death), releasing her debut album, titled The Trans-American Treatment and performing live in the Los Angeles area alongside The Amy Jo Johnson Band. She later dropped the band, and limited the instrumental presence in her shows to her acoustic guitar and her voice. She has released another album titled Imperfect released on 1-Mar-05.

In 2002 she played a bit role in the film Interstate 60 as a seducturess on the mythical Interstate 60.

She currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Russell Ira Crowe (born April 7, 1964) is an Oscar-winning film actor born in Wellington, New Zealand of Welsh, Norwegian and 1/16th Maori extraction. Crowe currently resides in Australia at both his Sydney home and his rural New South Wales property.

Early life and career

When he was four years old, his family moved to Australia where his parents pursued a career in filmset catering. His maternal grandfather, Stan Wyemss, was a cinematographer whom Crowe says produced the first film by director Geoff Murphy. The producer of the Australian TV series Spyforce was his mother's godfather, and Crowe at age 5 or 6 got hired for a line of dialogue in one episode, opposite series star Jack Thompson, whom years later played Crowe's father in The Sum of Us.

Crowe attended Sydney Boys High School. When he was 14, his family moved back to New Zealand, where he then attended the Auckland Grammar School. He did not complete secondary school, leaving early to help his family financially. Crowe returned to Australia at 21, intending to apply to the National Institute of Dramatic Art. "I was working in a theater show, and talked to a guy who was then the head of technical support at NIDA," Crowe recalled. "I asked him what he thought about me spending three years at NIDA. He told me it'd be a waste of time. He said, 'You already do the things you go there to learn, and you've been doing it for most of your life, so there's nothing to teach you but bad habits' " .

After appearing in the TV series Neighbours and Living with the Law, Crowe was cast in his first film, The Crossing (1990), a small-town love triangle directed by George Ogilvie. Before production started, a film-student protege of Ogilvie's, Steve Wallace, hired Crowe for the film "Blood Oath," a.k.a. "Prisoners of the Sun" (1990), which though filmed later was released a month ealier.

Hollywood

After initial success in Australia, Crowe began acting in American films. A three-time Oscar nominee, he won the Academy Award as Best Actor in 2001 for Gladiator, and he was also nominated for the Best Actor award for The Insider and A Beautiful Mind.

On March 9, 2005, Crowe revealed to GQ magazine that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents had approached him prior to the 73rd Academy Awards on March 25, 2001 and told him that the Islamist terrorist group al-Qaeda wanted to kidnap him. Crowe told the magazine that it was the first time he had ever heard of al-Qaeda (the September 11 attacks took place later that year) and was quoted as saying:

"You get this late-night call from the FBI when you arrive in Los Angeles, and they're, like, absolutely full-on. 'We’ve got to talk to you now before you do anything. We have to have a discussion with you, Mr. Crowe.'" Crowe recalled that "it was something to do with some recording picked up by a French policewoman, I think, in either Libya or Algiers...it was about taking iconographic Americans out of the picture as a sort of cultural-destabilization plan."

Crowe was guarded by Secret Service agents for the next few months, both while shooting films and at award ceremonies (Scotland Yard also guarded Crowe while he was promoting Proof of Life in London in February 2001). Crowe said that he "never fully understood what the fuck was going on." The FBI confirmed Crowe's statement (which is uncharacteristic of the agency in that it usually does not comment to the media).

Temperament

He won the Best Actor in the 2002 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards for his portrayal of John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. During the presentation for his award, he planned to read a piece of poetry called Sanctity by Patrick Kavanagh but was cut short to fit in the BBC's tape-delayed broadcast. At the awards after party, he accosted producer Malcolm Gerrie. Crowe later apologised for his actions, but many believe this incident was responsible for depriving Crowe of the Oscar for Best Actor that year. A Beautiful Mind won four of the eight awards for which it was nominated, with the lone and conspicuous exception being Crowe's nomination for Best Actor.

In March 2002, musician Moby alleged that Crowe had shoved him against the wall of a toilet in a Sydney night club and called him "American," but it was later revealed that Crowe was actually in Ecuador when the incident was alleged to have taken place.

The following month, a court heard charges against several men who were trying to sell a security tape featuring Crowe on the night of November 18, 1999 being involved in a melee, and later engaging in an argument with a couple.

In the early morning of June 6, 2005, Crowe was arrested and charged with second degree assault by New York Police, in connection with an incident at the Mercer Hotel, SoHo, New York, in which a broken telephone was thrown at the hotel front desk, striking a hotel employee. He was further charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon i.e. the telephone.

Crowe released a statement saying he was jet-lagged, missing his family in Australia and became frustrated after having repeated difficulties making a phone call to his wife in Australia . The concierge, Nestor "Josh" Estrada, was treated for a facial laceration on his upper right cheek. A Crowe spokesperson has said a phone was thrown at a wall but no person was assaulted. Crowe has publically apologized to Estrada, saying the incident was a "low point in his life."

His attorney is Gerald Lefcourt. In mid-August 2005, the Daily Mail reported that Crowe settled out of court with Estrada, agreeing to pay him $10.8 million in damages; the paper also reported that the NYPD will not pursue criminal charges against Crowe. Crowe's publicist later acknowledged that a deal had been reached, saying that "Both sides expressed satisfaction at the resolution." Australian tabloids claims that the true figure is about $100,000.

On November 18 2005, Crowe pleaded guilty to third-degree assault after throwing a telephone at a concierge at the Mercer Hotel. Crowe had said that the outburst was due to frequently being unable to get a telephone connection sp to contact his wife and child during his stay at the hotel. He was sentenced to conditional release on the basis that he not be arrested in the United States for a year and pay US$160 in court costs.

Family and general interests

On April 7, 2003, his 39th birthday, Crowe married the Australian singer and actress Danielle Spencer. Their son, Charles Spencer Crowe, was born on December 21 that year. Crowe previously dated the American filmstar Meg Ryan, after they met while filming Proof of Life (2000).

Two of Russell Crowe's cousins, Martin and Jeff Crowe are former New Zealand cricket captains. Crowe is a major supporter of the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team.

Music Career

Crowe is also a singer and composer. He was the lead singer and guitarist of an Australian pub rock band, 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts, which formed in 1992. The band had found neither critical nor popular success but had several releases including 1998's Gaslight, 2001's Bastard Life or Clarity and 2003's Other Ways of Speaking, plus various CD releases now out of print. His early stage name was "Rus Le Roq" and he was billed as such while performing with the Australian production of Rocky Horror.

According to a message from Crowe on his band's web site, the group has "dissolved/evolved" and his music would take a new direction. He continued with a collabortion with Alan Doyle of the Canadian band, Great Big Sea, in early 2005. A new single, Raewyn, was released on April 19, 2005. Former members of his previous band have taken part in the new project. An album entitled My Hand, My Heart has been released for download on iTunes and includes a tribute song to the late actor, Richard Harris, who became a close friend when the two were making Gladiator.

According to Russell, there is no 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts without his longtime musical partner, Dean Cochran, who was absent for the recording of My Hand, My Heart. Though Dean was present for a mid-2000s show in Le Thor, France. and took part in the filming of a music video for the song Weight of a Man, the band was billed as Russell Crowe and Friends.

Sandra Annette Bullock (born July 26, 1964 in Arlington County, Virginia) is an American film actress.

Sandra majored in drama at East Carolina University. She left ECU during the spring semester of her Senior year at ECU, only three credits short of graduating, to pursue acting in New York City, but found it difficult to establish herself. She later received an honorary degree from ECU. She moved to Los Angeles, California and landed a series of small roles in several independent films and, eventually, she got the lead role in the TV version of the movie Working Girl.

Bullock's first notable movie appearance was in Demolition Man in 1993, which led to her breakthrough performance in Speed the following year. She became a bona fide star in the mid–late 90s, carrying a string of successes on the strength of her name alone. She also runs her own production company, Fortis Films.

Biography

Bullock was born to the late German-born opera singer Helga Meyer who died of cancer on April 4, 2000, and the Alabama-born voice teacher John Bullock. She started singing as a child in Germany, where she also studied ballet and performed small parts in her mother's operas. She lived 12 years in Fürth, Germany. Bullock attended Washington-Lee High School where she was a cheerleader and was voted "Most Likely to Brighten up Your Day" by her class.

Nicole Mary Kidman (born June 20, 1967) is an Academy Award-winning American-born Australian actress, producer and singer.

Biography

Early life and career

Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Dr. Anthony David Kidman and Janelle Ann (nee MacNeille), who were of Scottish and Irish descent, and were both born in Australia. At the time, her father was a cancer research specialist in Washington, D.C. The family returned to Australia when Nicole was four years old, when Tony Kidman took on a lectureship at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Kidman started taking ballet lessons when she was four, and this led to studies at St. Martin's Youth Theatre in Melbourne, the Australian Theatre for Young People in Sydney, and then at the Philip Street Theatre, where she majored in voice production and theatre history. She studied at North Sydney Girls High School, but dropped out when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; Kidman concentrated on her family responsibilities until her mother's recovery.

Marriage to Tom Cruise

Her American debut was in Days of Thunder (1990), a stock-car racing movie, in which she played opposite Tom Cruise. Although Cruise was married to actress Mimi Rogers at the time, he and Kidman began an affair. Cruise divorced Rogers and the couple married on Christmas Eve of 1990 in Telluride, Colorado. They adopted two children, Isabella and Connor, and lived in Los Angeles, California, Australia, Colorado, and New York.

After ten years, the marriage was dissolved in 2001: there was much media speculation about the reasons for this, but both celebrities maintained their privacy and were guarded in their public comments. One persistent rumour claims however that Kidman's desire to bring up their children Catholic, and her critical views on Scientology caused problems in her marriage with Tom Cruise, who is an outspoken follower of the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard.

Hollywood career

After Days of Thunder, Kidman starred with Cruise in Ron Howard's Far and Away (1992).

1995 was to bring much success. Kidman featured in the all-star cast of Batman Forever and later that same year starred in To Die For, a satirical comedy that earned her high praise from critics, and talk of an Academy Award nomination for her performance, although this did not materialize. She did, however, win a Golden Globe award, and five other best actress awards for her comic portrayal of the murderous newscaster Suzanne Stone Maretto.

Kidman is author Philip Pullman's number-one choice to play Mrs. Coulter in the proposed film version of the first volume of the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Born Nicholas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California to August Coppola, an Italian American writer and professor, and Joy Vogelsang, a German American dancer. In 1976, Cage's parents divorced and he moved to Beverly Hills with his father. He is the nephew of both Francis Ford Coppola and Talia Shire.

Cage changed his name early in order to try to make his own way in acting without benefiting from his uncle's reputation. He chose the name Cage after the Marvel comic book hero Luke Cage, Power Man.

He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Leaving Las Vegas (1995). He has developed a reputation for alternating roles in action movies with more serious character-driven dramas, as well as the occasional black comedy.

He has a son, Weston Coppola Cage (born 1990), by model Kristina Fulton. On April 8, 1995 he married actress Patricia Arquette. They divorced on May 18, 2001. On August 10, 2002 he married Lisa Marie Presley and filed for divorce less than four months later. They divorced on May 16, 2004. He married former waitress Alice Kim on July 30, 2004, in a private ceremony in northern California. He has another son, Kal-el Coppola Cage (born October 3, 2005 in New York City), by the latter.

Cage is an immense Elvis fan.

Music career

So Real album coverOn December 7, 1999, fifteen-year old Moore released her debut album So Real on Sony's Epic Records, reaching a peak of #31 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. At the time when she burst out onto the music scene, Moore was considered only as the latest installment in a quickly-growing line of heavily-marketed 'pop princesses' that included Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson. As the last (and youngest) of the four to reach mainstream radio, her success didn't match that of her peers. Still, So Real managed to be certified platinum in the US by early 2000, while her debut single, the gold-selling "Candy" just missed the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, peaking at #19. A follow-up single entitled "Walk Me Home" was later released, though it failed to achieve much success.

Moore released a re-worked version of her debut album entitled I Wanna Be With You on May 9, 2000, only six months after So Real hit stores. The album included several new songs, along with tracks from So Real, as well as a couple of remixed songs. I Wanna Be With You reached a peak of #21 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified gold in the US for selling over 500,000 copies. The title track was featured as the lead single, reaching a peak of #17 on the Hot 100 and becoming Moore's biggest hit to date. The song was also featured in the movie Center Stage.

After the endeavors of her first two albums, Moore confessed that the music style and dance routines that had so heavily affected her success were 'not hers', and that she no longer felt comfortable performing them. So, in an attempt to become more artistically 'in control' of her music and image, Moore released the self-titled Mandy Moore on June 19, 2001. Critics hailed the album as an "attempt to stake her own space", and remarked that it was one of the most real and fulfilling pop albums on the market at the time. However, this critical success unfortunately did not lead to commercial success, as the LP debuted at a disappointing #35 on the Billboard 200. It has since went on to be certified gold in the US. The lead single, "In My Pocket", was tinged with a unique Middle-Eastern sound, along with a stunning, colorful video; it failed to make a dent in the charts, however, missing the Billboard Hot 100 completely. The follow-up single, "Crush", suffered the same fate, although it received considerable airtime on MTV. The final single, "Cry", was released in early 2002 and tied-in with Moore's movie A Walk to Remember. It also failed to perform well on the charts. The album sold well in Eastern Asia, however, and the songs "17" and "Saturate Me" were both released as singles overseas.

Coverage album coverOn October 21, 2003, Moore released her fourth album, Coverage. The record consisted entirely of cover songs from the 1970s and '80s that Moore was influenced by as a child, as well as songs she recently discovered. The album peaked at #14 on the Billboard 200 (her highest ranking to date), though the only released single entitled "Have A Little Faith In Me" failed to perform well on the charts. A video was made for the song "Drop The Pilot", though it was not released as a single in the US.

In early 2004, after Moore was dropped from Sony's Epic Records, she signed with Warner Brothers Records. However, before she was done with Sony, they released the album Best Of on November 16, 2004, which included all of Moore's biggest hits from the past five years. However, due to absolutely no promotion, the album peaked at an abysmal #148 on the Billboard 200.

It has been reported that Moore has been working on a new album since June 2005, and that recording will finally end in November 2005.

Film career

In 2001, Moore ventured into Hollywood when she appeared in a small part as the mean, blonde, popular cheerleader Lana Thomas opposite Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews in the film The Princess Diaries. In the movie, Moore performs with friends Anna and Fontana. The song "Stupid Cupid" can also be found on the movie's soundtrack. Up until this point, her acting had only included the straight-to-video children's movie Magic Al and the Mind Factory and a voiceover role in Dr. Dolittle 2. In 2001, Mandy also had a small part in the Good Charlotte music video for "Little Things" in which she played a snobby mean girl, much like the character she played in The Princess Diaries.

In 2002, Moore portrayed Jamie Sullivan in her first starring role opposite Shane West in A Walk to Remember. The movie, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, revolves around the developing romance between social outcast and devout Christian, Jamie, and West as bad boy Landon Carter. The movie was considered a moderate success, bringing in $41 million and cementing Moore's status as a genuine actress. That same year, she played the role of Aeris in the Playstation 2 role-playing game, Kingdom Hearts.

Moore and her A Walk to Remember co-star, Shane WestThe soundtrack featured four songs by Moore ("Cry", "Someday We'll Know", "It's Gonna Be Love" and "Only Hope"). Awards also began rolling in for Moore, as she took home Breakthrough Female Performance at that Summer's MTV Movie Awards, as well as Choice Female Breakout Performance and Choice Chemistry (with Shane West) at the Teen Choice Awards.

In 2003, Moore starred as Halley Martin in How to Deal. Allison Janney, Peter Gallagher, Alexandra Holden, and Trent Ford also starred. Halley is a troubled teen who decides to abandon love after witnessing her parents' (Janney and Gallagher as Lydia and Len) divorce, her best friend's (Holden as Scarlett) unexpected incident, and her sister's rocky engagement. Macon (Ford) comes along and restores Halley's faith in finding happiness when in love. The movie failed to draw in the teenage crowds in the US, and grossed a total of just $14 million.

Later in 2003, Moore appeared on Punk'd, after being tricked by Ashton Kutcher for destroying someone else's home.

Moore's next attempt at a box-office hit was 2004's Chasing Liberty, which only grossed a disappointing $12 million. Later that summer, she co-starred in a supporting role in the low-budget, religious satire Saved! as Hilary Faye, the popular "good girl" at a Christian school. Although the film never received wide-release, it was critically successful and she received many positive reviews for her role.

In 2005, Moore lent her voice to the movie Racing Stripes. Upcoming films include Romance & Cigarettes, which is slated for an August 2005 release, as well as Personal Shopping.

She is gearing up for a supporting role with Dennis Quaid, William Dafoe, Hugh Grant, Seth Meyers, Jennifer Coolidge, Chris Klein and recently-added Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden for American Dreamz. Shooting completed recently, and Mandy Moore is already back to work with a supporting role in Southland Tales. Mandy has also guest-starred on Entourage in a fictional role of herself quite a few times this season. She is portrayed in the HBO series as a co-star with Vincent Chase in the film adaptation of Aquaman, which in the series is fictionally directed by guest-star James Cameron, who portrays himself.

She will also star in boyfriend Zach Braff's comedy Scrubs later this year (2005).

She also has been cast to play Diane Keaton's daughter in Because I Said So. Keaton will portray a meddling mother who tries to keep her daughter (Moore) from following in her own footsteps. Early life and discovery

Carey is the third and youngest child of Patricia Hickey, an opera singer and voice coach of Irish-American-Catholic ethnicity, and Alfred Roy Carey (né Núñez), an aeronautical engineer of Afro-Venezuelan descent. She was named after the song "And They Call the Wind Maria", from the musical Paint Your Wagon. Carey's maternal grandparents disowned Mariah's mother for having married a non-white man. Mariah's siblings include her older sister Alison, and her older brother Morgan. As a multiracial family, the Carey household was met with racial slurs, hostility, and sometimes violence, causing the family to move frequently around the New York area. The strain on the family led to the divorce of Carey's parents when she was three years old. Carey had little contact with her father, and her mother worked several jobs to support the family.

Spending much of her time at home alone, Carey turned to music as an outlet. She began singing at the age of four, and first performed in public at the age of six. She began writing songs while in grade school, and her mother and the members of her opera company were impressed with her talents when Carey hit a cue note that her mother had missed. Carey attended and graduated from Oldfield Middle School and Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, although she was frequently absent due to efforts to break into the music business. After moving to New York City, she eventually landed a role as a backup singer for singer Brenda K. Starr.

1990–1992: Early commercial success

Carey's professional music career began with the release of her eponymous debut album, Mariah Carey, in 1990. However, Carey's attempt at a mellower work than her previous efforts raised eyebrows with some critics; Ron Wynn said Carey "blended into the background and let the tracks guide her, instead of pushing and exploding through them", and Stephen Holden criticised "Carey's lyrics, which are made up entirely of pop and soul clichés".

Carey and Boyz II Men recording "One Sweet Day" (1995), one of Carey's most successful singles.Following a popular duet with Luther Vandross of Diana Ross' "Endless Love", Carey released the album Merry Christmas in late 1994. In addition to covers of traditional Christmas songs, it contained a very successful original holiday song, "All I Want for Christmas Is You", which became her first number-one single in Japan and was described as "a well-crafted Phil Spector tribute" by Roch Parisien, who dismissed the album as an "otherwise vanilla set".

In 1995, Carey released Daydream, which combined the pop sensibilities of her previous album with modern R&B/hip-hop influences, and became her largest-selling LP in the U.S., receiving Diamond RIAA status. Its singles achieved similar success: "Fantasy" became only the second single to debut at number-one, "One Sweet Day" (a duet with Boyz II Men) spent a still-record sixteen weeks at number-one, and "Always Be My Baby" topped the Hot 100 year-end airplay charts in 1996. Critics such as Stephen Thomas Erlewine and Bill Lamb embraced Daydream as her finest album yet at the time, and it was named one of the best albums of the year by publications such as the New York Times and TIME magazine. Carey was the recipient of several awards following the success of the album, including a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Pop Artist of the Year, and she also received six Grammy nominations, but lost in all categories.

1997–2000: Independence and a new image

Carey and Mottola separated in 1997; although she had often projected the image of a happy marriage to the public, in reality she had felt emotionally and psychologically abused by Mottola, whom she often described as possessive. Their divorce became final the following year.

The album Butterfly (1997) and its lead single "Honey" (above) presented a more overtly sexual image of Carey than had been previously seen.Carey's 1997 album, Butterfly, saw her continuing to move in an R&B/hip-hop direction, while lead single "Honey" displayed a much more sexual Carey than before in both its lyrics and music video. "My All", another single from the album, became her thirteenth number-one hit, an unprecedented feat for a female artist. J.R. Reynolds said Butterfly "pushes the envelope", a move that he thought "may prove disconcerting to more conservative fans", but Reynolds still praised the album as "a welcome change". Another reviewer felt Butterfly illustrated "that Carey is continuing to improve and refine her music, which makes her a rarity among her '90s peers". 1997 also marked the year that Carey became a major songwriter and producer for other artists, contributing to the debut albums of Allure, 7 Mile and Blaque. She also wrote songs for the soundtracks to the films Men in Black (1997) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), and began to develop her own film/soundtrack project, All That Glitters. Towards the turn of the millenium, Carey became a prominent figure in hip-hop music, and collaborated with both new and established rappers, including Jay-Z.

During 1998, Carey had a romance with New York Yankees baseball player Derek Jeter, who was also biracial. She would state later that while the timing was not right for their relationship, it did teach her that multiracial families could function well. That year, the album #1's, a collection of her U.S. number-one singles up to that point, was released. It included four new songs, one of which was "When You Believe", a duet with Whitney Houston recorded for the soundtrack to The Prince of Egypt that won an Academy Award for Best Song. The album sold well, but critic Amy Linden said "while these may be the tracks that sold the most and charted the highest, these aren't necessarily Mariah's best songs". Also that year, she appeared on the first televised VH1 Divas program, a joint benefit concert appearance with singers such as Aretha Franklin and Shania Twain, though Carey's alleged prima donna behavior had already led many to consider her a diva. By the following year, she had begun a relationship with singer Luis Miguel.

Rainbow, Carey's sixth studio album, was released in 1999. Like Butterfly, it was comprised of pop and more R&B/hip hop oriented songs; Carey intended them to express her feelings about her divorce two years previously. Lead single "Heartbreaker" (featuring Jay-Z) was another number-one success for Carey, but despite several other collaborations with artists such as Joe, 98 Degrees and Snoop Dogg, the album was her lowest seller up to that point. There were also complaints in reviews that Carey was suffering a case of repetition; words such as "formulaic" and "predictable" came up from several critics. Although the recipient of several awards in recognition of her decade-spanning career, including Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award and the World Music Award for the world's Best-Selling Female Artist of the Millennium, a further sign of decline appeared when her final release from Rainbow, the double A-side "Crybaby"/"Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)", became her first song not to make the U.S. top twenty. Carey (via her website) publicly accused Sony of mishandling the release of the single.

2001–2004: Personal and career struggles

Following a successful decade in music, Carey finally ended her contract with Sony and signed a five-album contract with EMI's Virgin Records worth a reported US$80 million; however, things took a sudden downward turn for her. Just a few months later, in July 2001, it was widely reported that Carey had suffered a physical and emotional breakdown. She had left voicemail messages on her website (which were quickly removed) to her fans complaining of being overworked, and her relationship with Luis Miguel was ending. Carey made a notorious appearance on MTV's Total Request Live, where she handed out popsicles to the teen-aged audience and began a strip tease. By the month's end, Carey had checked into a psychiatric hospital, and her publicist announced that she would be taking a break from public appearances.

A scene from Carey's poorly-received star vehicle Glitter (2001).Her delayed semi-autobiographical film Glitter was panned by most critics upon its release and became a box office failure (see below). Carey was unable to do much promotion for the soundtrack album Glitter due to her ill health; it peaked in the U.S. at number-seven (her weakest showing to date). Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone noted that while the album was "a big step forward in terms of maturity", it had "zero melodic or emotional punch", while E! thought that even the most serious tracks on the album were "as glossy as her latest publicity shot". Lead single "Loverboy" reached number two on the Hot 100 thanks to a price cut, but the album's follow-up singles all failed to chart.

Shortly after the disastrous release of Glitter, Sony released a second compilation album, the 2-CD Greatest Hits, just before Christmas. In early 2002, EMI decided to part ways with Carey and they bought out her contract for $28 million, as an addition to the $21 million paid the previous year when singing, giving her another round of bad publicity. Later that year, she signed a three-album contract with Island Records' Def Jam. To add further to Carey's emotional burdens, her father died of cancer that same year.

Following a well-received supporting role in the independent film WiseGirls (see below), Carey released a new album, Charmbracelet, in which she expressed an interest in writing music that is more profoundly meaningful to her and her fans. Charmbracelet sold poorly, and the quality of Carey's vocals, which had previously been perceived as the singer's strong point, came under severe criticism. "Mariah's voice is shot, sounding in tatters" declared one review, "and there's not a moment where it sounds strong or inviting". "Carey's once glorious voice is all over the place" said another, while Barry Walters commented, "Carey's lead vocals blend into choruses of overdubbed Mariahs cooing overlapping phrases". Singles such as "Through the Rain" failed both on the charts and with pop radio, whose playlists had become less open to maturing "diva" stylists such as Carey, Whitney Houston and Céline Dion.

Her 2003 duet with Busta Rhymes, "I Know What You Want", fared considerably better, reaching the top five in the U.S.; Columbia Records later included it on the double CD The Remixes. That year, Carey was awarded the "Diamond Award" by the World Music Awards show in honour of selling over 150 million albums worldwide. She was featured on rapper Jadakiss' single "U Make Me Wanna" in 2004, which reached the top ten on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart and the top thirty of the Hot 100.

2005–the present: Return of the Voice

Carey's fourteenth album, The Emancipation of Mimi, was released in 2005, and was advertised as "The Return of the Voice", though Carey maintained that the voice has always been there. Todd Burns called Mimi "easily the strongest album that she’s made in this millennium", and Caroline Sullivan said the album contained "the first Mariah Carey tunes in years I wouldn't have to be paid to listen to again". It debuted at number one in the U.S. with the highest first week sales of Carey's career, and remained in the top five of the Billboard 200 album chart for twenty-one weeks. The single "It's Like That", which preceded the album, reached the top twenty, while "We Belong Together" (Carey's first U.S. number-one single in five years) became her biggest hit, reaching number one in several countries and being named the world's most-played single of the year by the World Music Awards. Another single, "Shake It Off", reached the U.S. top five, and "Don't Forget About Us" the top twenty.

Carey continues to collaborate with hip-hop artists, and is a featured artist on singles by Damizza, N.O.R.E. and Da Brat.

Acting career

Carey, who had participated in theatre workshops as a child, made her big screen debut as an opera singer and one of the ex-girlfriends of Jimmie (Chris O'Donnell) in The Bachelor (1999), a romantic comedy starring O'Donnell and Renée Zellweger. Critical response to Carey's cameo appearance, which reportedly took over thirty takes to film, was lukewarm: Paul Tatara from CNN derisively said Carey's casting as a talentless diva was "letter-perfect", and Tony Lee simply stated "no, she can't act".

Carey's first starring role was in Glitter, a 2001 film that had been in development as a vehicle for Carey since 1997. In it, she played Billie Frank, a struggling singer and songwriter who breaks into the music industry after she meets DJ Julian Dice (Max Beesley). Reviews were scathing; while Roger Ebert gave mild praise for Carey's performance, saying, "Her acting ranges from dutiful flirtatiousness to intense sincerity", most other critics panned it: Stephanie Zacharek called Carey "numbingly bland" in her role, and Michael Atkinson observed, "when she tries for an emotion—any emotion—she looks as if she's lost her car keys". Glitter was a box office failure, and Carey, who "won" a Worst Actress Razzie Award for her role, has since referred to the film as "a diva moment".

Carey, with Melora Walters and Mira Sorvino, in WiseGirls (2002).Carey next appeared co-starring with Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters as a tough-talking waitress in the independent film WiseGirls, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002. Critics who saw the film lauded Carey for her efforts: Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter predicted "Those scathing notices for Glitter will be a forgotten memory for the singer once people warm up to Raychel", and Roger Freidman, referring to her as "a Thelma Ritter for the new millennium", said "her line delivery is sharp and she manages to get the right laughs". WiseGirls producer Anthony Esposito cast Carey in another film, The Sweet Science, about an unknown but talented boxer who is recruited by a determined female boxing manager. However, the project later fell into development hell, while WiseGirls was not given a theatrical release and went straight-to-cable in the United States. Subsequent cameo appearances in the Damon Dash films Death of a Dynasty (2003) and State Property 2 (2005) went largely unnoticed by the ticket-buying public.

Other activities

Carey is a philanthropist who has donated both time and millions of dollars to organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the National Adoption Center, VH1's Save the Music Foundation, and the Fresh Air Fund among many others. Carey is well-known nationally for her work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in granting the wishes of the terminally ill Caleb Boulter, who called her "a very real person who overflows with compassion and love for others". As part of her involvement with the Fresh Air Fund, she is the co-founder of a camp located in Fishkill, New York that enables inner-city youth to embrace the arts, be introduced to career opportunities, and build self-esteem. The camp was named Camp Mariah in honour of Carey's work with the Fresh Air Fund, and she received a Congressional Award titled the Horizon Award for her charity work on behalf of children.

Carey performed as part of the America: A Tribute to Heroes nationally televised fundraiser in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and in December 2001 she performed before U.S. peacekeeping troops in Kosovo. She hosted the CBS television special At Home for the Holidays with Mariah Carey, which documented real-life stories of adopted children and foster families. In July 2005, Carey performed for Live 8 at the Live 8 concert, London with the African Children's Choir. She was also a participant in relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina's damage to the U.S. Gulf Coast later that year, performing on the Shelter from the Storm telethon and collaborating with Michael Jackson and other artists on an upcoming hurricane-relief single titled "From the Bottom of My Heart".

Carey, who considered writing her autobiography with David Ritz, has instead chosen to fictionalize her life story and adapt it into a series of illustrated children's books titled Automatic Princess, about an orphaned young girl who is biracial. Also forthcoming is a clothing and accessories line known as Automatic Princess, as well as a lingerie line, Kiss Kiss, which will be available for women in all sizes. However, Carey's fashion sense has itself often been criticized for being overly exposing or just poorly put together.

Voice

Carey is credited as having a five-octave vocal range; she can cover all the notes from the alto range leading to those of a coloratura soprano , and her vocal trademark is her ability to sing in the whistle register. She has often been incorrectly credited as having a six or even seven-octave vocal range. It has been suggested that Carey's publicists falsely claimed this at the start of her career, although it may also be a misstatement of the fact that Carey frequently accesses the notes situated in the seventh octave, her highest so far being a G#7, hit in two live performances of "Emotions" in 1991.

Carey's voice has come under minor scrutiny from some critics who believe that she does not effectively communicate the message of her songs. Rolling Stone, in a negative review of the album Emotions, wrote "Carey has a remarkable vocal gift, but to date, unfortunately, her singing has been far more impressive than expressive...at full speed her range is so superhuman that each excessive note erodes the believability of the lyric she is singing" , while others have referred to her high notes as "dog whistles". In comparison, criticisms were levelled at what Carey herself described as "breathy" vocals in some of her later songs on albums such as Charmbracelet. Said Carey, "Some people are of the opinion that if you have a big voice you should use it all the time...[but] I don't want to hear someone scream at me all the time".

Carey's voice, which is a continual subject of both positive and negative debate, was voted as the greatest voice in music in MTV and Blender Magazine's countdown of "The 22 Greatest Voices In Music", and is believed to have influenced singers such as Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson. In Cove Magazine's poll of the "100 Outstanding Pop Vocalists", she placed second behind Aguilera.

Personal

Julia Stiles was born the eldest of the three children (two daughters and a son) of John O'Hara, a teacher and businessman of Irish descent, and Judith Stiles, a potter of English and Italian ancestry. She attended Friends Seminary, Quaker school in Manhattan, and was an English major at Columbia University in New York City, though she had several times interrupted her studies to pursue her film career. She graduated in May 2005, five years after entering college. Stiles is a Democrat who supported John Kerry's candidacy for President of the United States , and her official site, which her mother helps to maintain, provides a link to Moveon.org.

Stiles has also worked for Habitat for Humanity, building housing in Costa Rica , and has worked with Amnesty International to try and raise awareness of the harsh conditions of immigration detention of unaccompanied juveniles; Marie Claire magazine, in January 2004, featured Stiles' trip to see conditions at the Berks County Youth Center in Leesport, Pennsylvania ]. The actress has described herself as a feminist and wrote on the subject in The Guardian :

Ironically, the F word [Feminism] is now pejorative in the mainstream because it is seen to represent a woman's renunciation of her femininity. It's an issue many women struggle with today — including female studio executives. After Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, women of my generation have not employed self-censorship, but rather we challenge the notion that being a feminist is in opposition to being feminine.

Stage career

Stiles started acting at age eleven, performing with New York's La MaMa Theatre Company, securing work by submitting photographs of herself in costume to the company and asking that she be kept in mind for juvenile roles [7]. She graduated to adult roles by performing in Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues and, in the summer of 2002, appeared as Viola, the lead role in Shakespeare in the Park's production of Twelfth Night with Jimmy Smits. Reviewing the production, Ben Brantley of The New York Times saluted Stiles as "the thinking teenagers' movie goddess" who put him in mind of a "young Jane Fonda". In the spring of 2004, she made her London stage debut opposite Aaron Eckhart in a revival of David Mamet's play Oleanna at the Garrick Theatre.

Film career

Stiles' first lead role was in Wicked (1998)Stiles' first film was a non-speaking part in I Love You, I Love You Not (1996) with Claire Danes and Jude Law. She also had small roles as Harrison Ford's daughter in Alan J. Pakula's The Devil's Own (1997) and in M. Night Shyamalan's Wide Awake. Her first lead was in Wicked (1998), playing a teenage girl who murders her mother so she can have her father all to herself. Joe Balthai wrote she was "the darling of the 1998 Sundance Film Festival" and Internet movie writer Harry Knowles said she was the "discovery of the fest," but the film was not commercially released in the U.S. and went direct-to-video.

The role that made her a star was Kat Stratford, opposite Heath Ledger, in Gil Junger's 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), an adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew set in a Seattle high school. She won an MTV Movie Award for "Breakthrough Female Performance" for the role, and the Chicago Film Critics voted her the most promising new actress of the year. Foreign critics applauded her work as well. Adina Hoffman praised her as "a young, serious looking Diane Lane" and Martin Hoyle said Stiles played Kat "with bloody-minded independent charm from the beginning with hints of wistfulness beneath the determination."

Her next starring role was in Down to You, which was heavily panned by critics but was a financial success, and earned Stiles and her co-star Freddie Prinze, Jr. a Teen Choice Award nomination for their on-screen chemistry.

She subsequently appeared in two more Shakespearean adaptations. The first was playing the Desdemona role, opposite Mekhi Phifer in the title role, in Tim Blake Nelson's O (2001), Othello set in a high school. The second was playing Ophelia in Michael Almerayda's Hamlet (2000), with Ethan Hawke in the lead. Neither was a great success; O had been subjected to many delays and a change of distributors and Hamlet was an art house film shot on a minimal budget.

Her next commercial success was in Save the Last Dance (2001), as an aspiring ballerina forced to leave her small town in downstate Illinois to live with her struggling musician father in Chicago after her mother is killed. At her new, nearly all-black school, she falls in love with the character played by Sean Patrick Thomas, who teaches her hip-hop dance steps that get her into The Juilliard School. The role won her two more MTV awards for "Best Kiss" and "Best Female Performance", and a Teen Choice Award for best fight scene for her battle with Bianca Lawson. Rolling Stone pronounced her "the coolest co-ed", putting her on the cover of its April 12, 2001 issue. She told Rolling Stone that despite rumors, she did all her own dancing in the film, though the way the film was shot and edited made it appear otherwise.

With Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy (2004)In David Mamet's State and Main (2000), about a film shooting on location in a small town in Vermont, she played a teenage girl who seduces a film actor (Alec Baldwin) with a weakness for young girls. Stiles also played opposite Stockard Channing in the dark art house film The Business of Strangers (2001) as a conniving underling who exacts revenge on her cold boss. Channing was impressed by her co-star: "In addition to her talent, she has a quality that is almost feral, something that can make people uneasy. She has an effect on people," said Channing. Stiles also had small roles as a CIA operative in The Bourne Identity (2002) and its sequel The Bourne Supremacy (2004). Aimee Agresti quoted producer Lynda Obst as saying Stiles was turning into the next Meryl Streep.

Her next leading role was in Mona Lisa Smile (2003) as Joan, a student at Wellesley College in 1953, whose art professor (Julia Roberts) encourages her to pursue a career in law rather than becoming a wife and mother. Stephen Holden referred to her as one of the cinema's "brightest young stars," but the film met with generally unfavorable reviews.

Stiles played a Wisconsin co-ed, with dreams of becoming a doctor, who is swept off her feet by a Danish prince in The Prince and Me (2004), directed by Martha Coolidge. Stiles told Leslie Goober that she was very similar to the character, Paige Morgan, but critic Scott Foundas said while she was, as always, "irrepressibly engaging" the film was a "strange career choice for Stiles." This echoed criticism in reviews of A Guy Thing (2003), a romantic comedy with Jason Lee and Selma Blair; Dennis Harvey wrote that Stiles was "wasted," and Stephen Holden called her "a serious actress from whom comedy does not seem to flow naturally."

Television

Stiles' work on television has been more limited. After two appearances as the computer punk Erica on the PBS series Ghostwriter in 1993 and 1994, she appeared as a guest star on the medical drama Chicago Hope. She has been seen in two made-for-TV movies. In Before Women Had Wings (1997) on CBS, she played opposite Ellen Burstyn and Oprah Winfrey in an adaptation of the novel by Connie May Fowler. Marcia Ross, the film's casting director, told Jeffrey Ressner "she projects an intelligent depth, she's not girlish, and she'll easily grow into adult roles."

Stiles also played a teenage girl who finds herself pregnant and runs away from her unforgiving father (Bill Smitrovich) in NBC's miniseries The '60's (1999), a film Caryn James dismissed as "conspicuously idiotic." Stiles was the public face of the film, with NBC using her face, painted with a peace sign and the American flag, both in its advertising and on the cover of the soundtrack album.

On March 17, 2001, Stiles hosted Saturday Night Live and eight days later introduced a music nominee at the 73rd Academy Awards. She returned to Saturday Night Live on May 5 in a cameo as President George W. Bush's daughter Jenna. MTV profiled her in its Diary series in 2003, and she was "Punk'd" by Ashton Kutcher at a museum in the spring of 2004.

She is the daughter of Judy Loe (a stage actress) and the late Richard Beckinsale, a well-known television actor who died in 1979, at the age of 31. Kate's paternal great-grandfather was Burmese.

Beckinsale she won first prizes in several young writing competitions. After finishing school in London, she followed in the footsteps of her parents and began her acting career. Her first role was in One Against the Wind, a television film about World War II that was first aired in 1991. Beckinsale then began studying German, French and Russian at New College, Oxford University, though she did not complete her studies. She felt that a general university background would be better for her than attending a school of performing arts.

Film career

During her first year at Oxford, Beckinsale was offered a part in Kenneth Branagh's big-screen film, Much Ado About Nothing, adapted from the Shakespeare play. She spent her last year of studies in Paris, after which she decided to quit university and concentrate on her acting career. She subsequently appeared in a few notable but low-profile films, including Cold Comfort Farm (1995) and The Last Days of Disco (1998). She also appeared in television films and in stage roles.

Her first major American film, Brokedown Palace (1999), was a not a commercial success. Soon after, Beckinsale was cast in the 2001 film Pearl Habor, which was one of the highest grossing films of its year. In the years following, she appeared in a series of American films that were high-profile but were given a poor critical reception, including Serendipity (2001), Underworld (2003) and Van Helsing (2004).

Beckinsale was selected by Hello Magazine as England's #1 Beauty of 2002.

Private life

Beckinsale and Welsh actor Michael Sheen have a daughter, Lily, but they are no longer together. In June 2003, she became engaged to the director of Underworld, Len Wiseman, and the two were wed in May 2004 in Bel-Air, California.

Early life

Heigl was born in Washington, D.C. to parents Nancy and Paul, of Irish and German descent; she was raised a Mormon. The family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut a short time later. Tragedy struck her family when her older brother Jason died in 1986 of brain injuries suffered in a car accident. He had been thrown from the back of a pickup truck, and doctors determined Jason was brain-dead. Despite their grief, the family decided to donate his organs. This has motivated Katherine to become a strong proponent of organ donation.

Career

When she was nine years old, an aunt visiting the family decided to take a number of photographs of the young Heigl. After returning to her home in New York, the aunt sent the photos to a number of modelling agencies, all with the permission of Katherine's parents. Within a few weeks, Heigl had been signed as a child model.

Almost immediately, a client slated her for use in a magazine advertisement. Television jobs soon followed, the first in a national spot for Cheerios breakfast cereal. It was not long until she landed her first big-screen debut in the 1992 movie That Night. After meeting such fast success and enjoying her new-found career, she realized that acting was her passion.

Heigl then appeared as Christina Sebastian in Steven Soderbergh's Depression-era drama King of the Hill before landing her first leading role as Nicole in the 1994 comedy My Father The Hero. During this time, Heigl continued to attend New Canaan High School, balancing her film and modeling work with her academic studies.

She then played opposite Steven Seagal in the role of Sarah Ryback in in 1995 action thriller Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Despite an increased focus on acting, she still modeled extensively, appearing regularly in magazines such as Seventeen. She took the lead role in Disney's Wish Upon a Star in 1996. It was also in 1996 that Heigl's parents divorced. After her high school graduation in 1997, she and her mother moved into a 4-bedroom house in Malibu Canyon, Los Angeles. Heigl's mother then became her manager.

In 1998 she co-starred with Peter Fonda in a re-working of the classic Shakespearian play The Tempest, set during the American Civil War. Later in 1998 Heigl was featured in the 1998 films Bug Buster and Bride of Chucky. In 1999, Heigl turned her attention to television when she accepted the role of Isabel Evans on the science fiction TV drama Roswell, a modest role that was expanded in the show's second and third seasons.

To publicize her role on Roswell, she appeared on the covers of magazines such as TV Guide, Maxim, and Teen as well as appearing in FHM. She later appeared in the FHM and Maxim calendars and FHM's annual 100 sexiest women in the world. While Roswell was in production, Heigl worked on several films, including, 100 Girls, an independent 2001 film in which she played competitive tomboy Arlene, and Valentine, a horror film starring David Boreanaz and Denise Richards in which she played medical student Shelley Fisher.

In the spring of 2001, Heigl accepted a role in Ground Zero, a television thriller scheduled to be telecast that fall, which was based on the bestselling novel, The Seventh Power, by James Mills. She co-starred as a brilliant and politically-concerned college student who helps to build a nuclear device to illustrate the need for a change in national priorities, but which ends up in the hands of a terrorist following betrayal by a fellow student. After September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, however, the film was shelved when its plot was considered too inappropriate, and it re-emerged in 2003 under the title Critical Assembly. After the terrorist attacks, Heigl recorded a passionate public service announcement for the American Red Cross in an effort to help raise money for victims.

In early 2003, Heigl returned to the horror genre with Evil Never Dies, a modern-day variation on the Frankenstein story co-starring Thomas Gibson. She played the role of Eve, the professor's assistant whose intentions are unclear. Love Comes Softly, a telefilm for Hallmark Entertainment in 2003, found Heigl starring in the role of Marty Claridge, a young, pregnant newlywed travelling west. In October 2003, Heigl was cast opposite Johnny Knoxville, as the leading lady in The Ringer, a Farrelly brothers comedy that was later released in December 2005. Heigl was then cast as Isabella Linton in MTV's modern revamp of Emily Brontë's classic novel Wuthering Heights.

Heigl was cast in the role of Romy in the 2005 movie Romy and Michele: In The Beginning, a prequel to the 1997 movie, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. Heigl is currently starring in Grey's Anatomy, a medical drama on ABC.

Personal life

Heigl had dated her former Roswell co-star, Jason Behr, for several years. However, in interviews such as in the November 2004 FHM, she indicated that the relationship had come to an end. She also told FHM she did not lose her virginity until she was 22.

Jennifer Lynn Connelly (born December 12, 1970 in the Catskill Mountains, New York) is an American film actress. Although she has been working in the film industry since she was a teenager, she has only recently received critical acclaim for her work, most notably for Requiem for a Dream (2000) and A Beautiful Mind (2001), for which she won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.

Early life

Connelly was born to Gerard Connelly (an Irish Catholic immigrant and clothing manufacturer) and Eileen (a New York-bred Jewish mother who was an antiques dealer and a masseuse at Esalen). Jennifer was raised in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Bridge, attending St. Ann's School, except for four years the family spent living in Woodstock, New York. One of her father's friends through the garmet trade was an advertising executive.

The executive friend suggested Jennifer audition at a modelling agency. At the age of 10, her career started in newspaper and magazine ads, then moved to television commercials.

Her first film role was in the 1984 film Once Upon a Time in America, where she had a small part as "young Deborah Gelly" in Sergio Leone's gangster epic. She next starred in cult Italian horror director Dario Argento's Phenomena (1985).

Early film career

Connelly became a star on her next picture, the fantasy Labyrinth (1986). Connelly played Sarah, a teenager who wishes her baby brother into the world of goblins ruled by goblin king Jareth (played by rock superstar David Bowie). Through a series of adventures reminiscent of Alice In Wonderland, The Muppets and Monty Python, Sarah does indeed manage to rescue her brother. A product of the talents of Jim Henson, George Lucas, ex-Monty Python member Terry Jones and designer Brian Froud, the film was a solid hit and enjoys a cult reputation today.

Connelly seemed stuck as to how to follow up on this success. She made a Japanese pop record and starred in several obscure films - Etoile (1988) and Some Girls (1988). The Dennis Hopper directed The Hot Spot (1990) was underwhelming, both critical and commercially. Another film, Career Opportunities, was more successful and is considered a teen cult classic though it, and Hot Spot threatened to typecast her in the "sexpot" stereotype.

She began studying English at Yale, but transferred two years later to Stanford. She did not graduate from either institution.

The big-budget Disney film The Rocketeer (1991) similarly failed to restart Connelly's career.

The moody indie film Far Harbor (1996), showed her playing against type and hinted at a much broader range than she had previously shown. Connelly began to appear in smaller but well regarded films such as Inventing the Abbotts (1997) and Waking the Dead (2000). The film Dark City (1998) afforded her the chance to work with such top-flight actors as Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Ian Richardson and Kiefer Sutherland. Connelly revisited her ingenue image again (although in a more understated way) for the film Pollock (2000).

Comeback

Connelly's big breakthrough finally came in the 2000 film Requiem for a Dream. The edgy, experimental film started Connelly and Jared Leto as drug users on the edge of a breakdown. The film, which was a big critical success, firmly established Jennifer Connelly as a serious, talented actress. Connelly's star was on the rise and she next starred in Ron Howard's film A Beautiful Mind (2001).

Connelly essayed the role of Alicia Nash, the long-suffering wife of a brilliant mathematician John Nash, (played by Russell Crowe) who struggles with mental illness. The film, based on real life events, was a critical and commercial success and earned Connelly an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress - which she won. Clearly established in film, Connelly could work with the best and brightest talent in both commercial and independent film.

Connelly starred in two films in 2003: The Hulk and House of Sand and Fog. The Hulk was something of a box office disappointment, but afforded Connelly the chance to work with noted director Ang Lee. House of Sand and Fog, based on the novel by Andre Dubus, was reminiscent of much of her independent film work of the late 1990s.

Connelly's most recent film is Dark Water (2005). Dark Water, based on a Japanese film, was a foray into subtle horror that failed to win over either critics or audiences.

Personal life

Connelly is married to the British actor Paul Bettany, whom she met while working on A Beautiful Mind; the couple's son, Stellan (named after Stellan Skarsgård), was born August 5, 2003. She has also a five-year-old son, Kai, from a previous relationship.

Heather Deen Locklear (born September 25, 1961 in Westwood, California, United States) is an American actress. Heather is the daughter of Bill and Diane Locklear. She is the youngest of four children. She has two sisters, Laurie and Colleen, and a brother, Mark. Her father was a dean of the School of Engineering at UCLA. Heather attended UCLA until she quit to pursue acting. She has African and Lumbee Native American roots on her father's side, but her ancestry is mostly Scottish.

Career

While attending UCLA, Heather Locklear began modeling and working in commercials for the school store. In 1979, Locklear landed her first TV role in a TV movie and then on an episode of CHiPs a year later. She landed a few more bit parts in shows like Eight Is Enough and The Fall Guy, before Aaron Spelling cast her in his new TV series Dynasty. When the series premiered in 1981, Locklear was a hit. Spelling immediately cast her opposite William Shatner in the cop show T.J. Hooker. The show's 1982 premiere sent Locklear into the Hollywood stratosphere. Throughout the 1980's she continued to work on these two shows and in numerous movies and television specials. In the 1990's (after a failed comedy sitcom Going Places), Locklear won the role that is probably her best known: the vixen Amanda Woodward on the series Melrose Place from 1993 to 1999. Locklear also won First Americans in the Arts: Best Actress in a TV series for her role on Melrose Place. After her run on the show, she was immediately on another TV sitcom, Spin City, opposite Michael J. Fox. Locklear also served for 6 years as the spokesperson for the Health and Tennis Corporation of America. Locklear starred in the Airport drama LAX, which ran from 2004 to 2005.

Home Life

Heather was married to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee from 1986-1993. After Lee and Locklear's divorce, she married Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora on December 17, 1994 in Paris. On October 4, 1997 she gave birth to her first child Ava Elizabeth.

Graham was brought up in a traditional Catholic family of Irish descent. Growing up in Virginia where her father worked as an FBI agent, she attended Sumac Elementary School. Initially, Graham's parents were very supportive of her budding acting career, with her mom driving her to her auditions. Later, her father and mother were insistent that she should not appear in any movie featuring sex. This difference of opinion may have cost her the lead role in Heathers in 1989, the dark high school comedy that made an instant star of Winona Ryder. Graham is currently estranged from her parents, though they are hopeful for a reconciliation. She has publicly discussed her conversion to a new-age eastern-based religion and philosophy.

After high school, Graham enrolled in the University of California at Los Angeles. While pursuing a drama degree at UCLA, Graham met James Woods. Their subsequent romantic involvement led to Graham being cast in Diggstown (1992), which starred Woods. After two years had passed, Graham dropped out of UCLA to pursue acting full time, over her parents' objections. She moved to Hollywood where she worked different jobs while continuing to establish herself as a starlet, for a time romantically involved and living with once famous New Romantic glam-rocker Adam Ant.

Though earlier Graham had a number of critically noted acting parts including Nadine in Drugstore Cowboy 1989, her breakthrough role was that of Roller Girl in Boogie Nights (1997), for which she received several award nominations. She achieved international stardom in 1999 with her lead role as Felicity Shagwell in Mike Myers' second Austin Powers comedy: The Spy Who Shagged Me. More recently, she starred as Mary Kelly in the film From Hell (2001), based on the story of Jack the Ripper.

She was named by People Magazine as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World 2001". In addition to her relationship with James Woods, she also has been romantically involved with actor Edward Burns, producer-director Chris Weitz, actor Josh Lucas, actor Heath Ledger, actor Elias Koteas, actor Kyle MacLachlan, and director Stephen Hopkins.

Graham enjoyed special guest-star status on several episodes of NBC-TV's Scrubs during its fourth season (2004-2005).

In 2005, Graham became the spokeswoman and TV model for Garnier brand of hair care products. Graham's print ad for Skyy vodka, which was photographed in 1993 (titled "#3, Entourage") is still appearing in national magazines today as well. ABC-TV announced that production has begun on "Emily's Reasons Why Not," with Graham slated to be its star.

Her family

She is the granddaughter of stage actor John Barrymore, and the great-niece of Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Her father, John Drew Barrymore, and half-brother, John Blyth, are also actors (although they haven't experienced the critical or commercial success the other Barrymores have enjoyed). "Drew" was the maiden name of her great-grandmother, Georgiana; "Blythe" was the original surname of the dynasty founded by her great-grandfather, Maurice. Drew's mother is Hungarian-born actress and model, Ildiko Jaid Mako (b. 1944).

Career

Barrymore's career began at the age of 11 months, when she appeared in a dog food commercial. She shot to fame as a child actor when she co-starred in the 1982 Steven Spielberg film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Biography

In the wake of this sudden stardom, she endured a notoriously troubled childhood, drinking alcoholic beverages by the time she was 9, smoking marijuana at 10, and snorting cocaine at 12. Barrymore later described this early period of her life in her 1990 autobiography, Little Girl Lost. Though overcoming her substance abuse problems by the time she entered adulthood, Barrymore maintained her "bad girl" image, and in fact leveraged her new found role as a sex symbol to stage a career comeback in the 1990s, playing a teenage seductress in Poison Ivy, and posing nude for the January 1995 issue of U.S. magazine Playboy. Steven Spielberg, Barrymore's godfather, gave her a quilt for her 20th birthday with a note that read "Cover yourself up". Enclosed was a copy of her Playboy appearance, with the pictures altered by his art department so that she appeared fully clothed. At that time she had also appeared nude in her last five movies. During a 1995 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, Barrymore shocked the normally unflappable host by climbing onto his desk and flashing her breasts at him (but with her back to the camera), as part of a dance for his birthday. She is also well known for her acting on television, such as her recurring appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel as Faith, as well as the main character in the series Tru Calling.

Personal life

Eliza was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, to an Albanian father and Danish mother, and raised in the LDS Church, the faith of her mother (though she is not actively practicing). She has three older brothers, Aaron, Ben, and Nate, the latter of whom is also an actor. Dushku lives in the Los Angeles area with Nate, the youngest of her three brothers, whom she calls her "partner in crime."

A young Eliza appears in the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, True Lies.

Early career

Eliza came to the attention of casting agents when she was 10. Along with her brother, she went to a commercial audition where she tripped on the stairs, bloodied her nose, and became an instant drama queen. She was chosen at the end of a five month search throughout the United States for the lead role of Alice, opposite Juliette Lewis in the film That Night. In 1993, Dushku landed a role as Pearl alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in This Boy's Life, a role that she said opened a lot of doors. Dushku says that Dicaprio taught her how to deal with bullies and other high school dangers, for which she is grateful.

The following year, she played the teenage daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies. She would also have parts as Paul Reiser's daughter in Bye Bye, Love, as Cindy Johnson with Halle Berry and Jim Belushi in Race the Sun, as well as roles in a television movie and a short film.

Dushku took some time off from acting to finish her junior and senior years of high school. She was accepted to the George Washington and Suffolk Universities in Boston.

Later roles

After completing high school, Eliza returned to acting with the role of Faith, a Slayer much more troubled than the main character Buffy. Though initially planned as a five episode role, the character became so popular that she stayed on for the entirety of the third season. She has also made guest appearances in Buffy's spin-off, Angel.

Because of her convincing role as a sociopath, she became an icon to many criminals. She was inundated with piles of fan mail from legions of prisoners. She said that:

I've been getting fan mail from maximum security penitentiaries and death row. What are the authorities thinking of in playing a show with young teenage girls to Death Row inmates? They write everything — disgusting things that you don't even want to know about. And they send me pictures — 'Oh, here's a picture of me before I was incarcerated!' — and there's some guy sat on the sofa with a bottle of beer and a moustache, and a big gut. It's so creepy. Way more creepy than Buffy.

In 2000, she starred with Kirsten Dunst in the cheerleader comedy Bring It On, which was a surprising success at the box office that spawned a sequel. Kevin Smith invited Dushku to be a part of his final adventure for his two characters, Jay and Silent Bob, in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, where Eliza co-starred with Shannon Elizabeth, Ali Larter, Ben Affleck, and others. After this, Dushku starred in Soul Survivors, opposite Ben Affleck's brother Casey, followed by a role in The New Guy.

Eliza in a guest appearance on That '70s Show, alongside actors Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher.Eliza then returned to work with Robert De Niro and director Michael Caton-Jones in City by the Sea, playing James Franco's junkie girlfriend and mother of his child. The film garnered attention from a wider adult audience and several good reviews.

2003 saw the release of Wrong Turn, a horror film in which Eliza had the starring role, and The Kiss, an independent comedy-drama. Starting that same year, she also starred in a new Fox TV series, Tru Calling, where she played the main character, Tru Davies, a medical student whose grant is pulled out from under her, forcing her to take a job at a local morgue. There, she discovers that she has the power to "re-live" the previous day over again, an ability she used to right wrongful deaths. She also attempts to help her troubled family - a drug-addicted sister and a gambling-addicted brother.

On October 1, 2005, she announced at Wizard World Boston that shooting had begun for Nobel Son (to be released in 2006), in which she will star with Alan Rickman, Danny DeVito, Bill Pullman, and Peter Boyle. Eliza also announced that she would appear in a Broadway production entitled "Dog Sees God" in December of 2005.

Eliza Dushku Foundation

Dushku has started a new project with her father to help Camp Hale, a summer camp for inner-city Boston boys open since 1900, where the Dushku family are closely involved: the Eliza Dushku Foundation. Through the sale of props and fan memorabilia, the Dushkus hope to generate increased contributions in order to pay for the maintenance of Camp Hale for generations to come.

With co-stars of Honeymoon in VegasParker got her first big break as an actress in 1982 when she was cast in the CBS sitcom Square Pegs. Playing Patty Green - an awkward teen trying to be cool but not quite managing it - she won critical acclaim. The short lived show lasted only one season before being cancelled by the network but it had been a valuable kick start to Parker's career. In the two years that followed, she was cast in four films - the most significant of those being Footloose in 1984. The remainder of the 1980s was filled with TV Specials and largely mediocre movies - but at least she had steady work and Parker was becoming a much respected actress, if not a publically recognised one.

By the early 1990s her career was gaining momentum. In 1991 she appeared in the Romantic Comedy L.A. Story - both the movie and her performance garnered some positive reviews. The following year she landed an important starring role in Honeymoon in Vegas in which she starred with Nicholas Cage and once again, Parker and the movie were a big hit with the public. A less successful comedy came the following year (1993) in the shape of Hocus Pocus, in which she played opposite Bette Midler. The same year she starred in a different kind of film - this time an action/thriller titled Striking Distance. The next year saw her star opposite Johnny Depp in the classic movie Ed Wood - consistantly listed as one of the finest movies of the 1990's this was her biggest break yet. Miami Rhapsody in 1995 saw her back on familiar territory with more Romantic Comedy material and a leading role. 1996 was a busy year as she had leading roles in six movies, with the most important of them being Mars Attacks! which was one of the most commercially successful pictures of the year.

After a quiet 1997, Sarah Jessica Parker's career was about to sky rocket. The script for an HBO Drama/Comedy series titled Sex and the City had been sent to her and the show's creator Darren Star was determined to bag her as his star of the project. He didn't need to convince her much, Parker adored the script and she quickly signed up to the ambitious project. Before long her co-stars - Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis were in place and work on the pilot began.

During the production of Sex and the City's fifth season, Parker was also working on romantic comedy Life Without Dick. It didn't matter when that picture flopped at the box office - by that time Sarah Jessica Parker had made the transition from "Promising Newcomer" of the 90's to bona fida superstar.

Her transition to status of "Superstar" was helped along by her influence in the world of fashion. With a natural sense of style second to none, Sarah Jessica Parker quickly became one of the worlds most stylish and adored celebrities. But her status as one of the world's "Best Dressed" is certainly not an indication of a lack of greater talent. In addition to work in movie and television, she is also a very highly respected Stage Actress. Lead roles as a dog in the critically acclaimed off-Broadway play Sylvia, alongside husband Matthew Broderick in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and the Tony Award-nominated Once Upon a Mattress as Princess Winifred the Woebegone are some of her most critically acclaimed performances. As a young girl, she trained in singing and ballet and was soon cast in the Broadway production of The Innocents. After a run of promising performances in several increasingly important films and television shows she met actor Robert Downey Jr. and lived with him for seven years between 1984 and 1991. As her career continued to blossom into the 1990s, she met John Kennedy Jr. and dated him for several months.

In May 1997, she married actor Matthew Broderick. Shortly after she began work on what would be her biggest role yet as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City and before the end of the following year she had become an international superstar. Her family

Gellar was born in New York City to Jewish-American parents Arthur and Rosellen. After her parents divorced in 1984, she was brought up by her mother. She refuses to acknowledge any relationship with her father saying "Just because you donate sperm does not make you a father." Arthur died on October 9, 2001 of unknown causes.

Life and career

She has been acting since the age of four, when she did a commercial for Burger King. Her best friend as a child was Melissa Joan Hart, who later was the star of the television series Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

Acting roles

Gellar's major break came in 1992 in the teen soap opera Swan's Crossing. From there, she moved on to the long-running soap opera All My Children, where she played the conniving character Kendall Hart, the long-lost daughter of character Erica Kane (played by Susan Lucci). In 1995, at the age of 18, she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress in a Drama Series.

Scooby-Doo

Gellar found greater box office success playing Daphne in Scooby-Doo, a live-action adaption of the cartoon series. Despite being universally panned by critics, the movie was highly popular with audiences. Gellar also appeared in the movie's sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004).

The year of 2004 was marked by a point of controversy in Gellar's career, as the president of the talent agency representing Geller, David Wirtschafter, told the The New Yorker that the success of Gellar's low-budget film The Grudge (a remake of the Japanese horror film Ju-on: The Grudge) "takes our client Sarah Michelle Gellar, who now is nothing at all, and it makes her a star, potentially. She won the Best Actress Academy Award in 2000 for her critically praised turn as the title character in Erin Brockovich after two previous nominations during the 1990s. She was also placed at the pinnacle of the Ulmer Scale, a comprehensive guide to the global star power of actors and directors in independent and studio films created by James Ulmer, ahead of such other luminaries as Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks. Roberts' father, Walter Grady Roberts, was a vacuum cleaner salesman, actor and writer of Irish, Scottish, Welsh extraction on behalf of his father, Walter Thomas Roberts, and English-Scottish descent on the part of his mother, Beatrice Beal. Julia's mother, Betty Lou Bredemus, a church secretary and actress, was born in Minneapolis in 1934, daughter of football player Wendell John Bredemus (whose mother Eleanor Johnson was born in Sweden) and Elizabeth Ellen Billingsley. Her parents divorced when she was five, and her mother remarried. Her father died of cancer when Roberts was nine. Her elder brother Eric Roberts, from whom she is estranged, is also an actor. So is her niece, Emma Roberts, whom she would often take along on sets when she was younger.

Roberts wanted to be a veterinarian as a child, but soon after graduating from Smyrna's Campbell High School, she headed to New York to join her sister and pursue a career in acting. Once there she signed with Clicks modeling agency and enrolled in acting classes.

Julia Roberts made her film debut playing a supporting role opposite her brother, Eric, in Blood Red, which although completed in 1986 was not released until 1989. Rail-thin, long-legged, and sporting a thick, curly mane of auburn hair, she looked more coltish than elegant in the movie. Here, her large hazel eyes and huge mouth are capable of much expression, sometimes radiance, when she cuts loose with her trademark megawatt smile and a braying laugh.

Roberts' personal life has often been in the spotlight, a fact that served as the basis of her (1999) film Notting Hill, a romantic comedy about a famous actress falling for an ordinary guy played by Hugh Grant. Her character, Anna Scott, was said to be closely modeled on Roberts herself. (When asked in one scene how much she was paid to appear in a movie, Scott replies "fifteen million dollars"—precisely the amount Roberts had received to appear in Notting Hill.)

Roberts was engaged to actor Kiefer Sutherland in 1991 but ended the relationship just days before the wedding. Julia ran off to Europe with Jason Patric, and the two were eventually a couple after she and Kiefer broke up. She later eloped with country and western singer Lyle Lovett shortly after meeting him. Tara Reid (born November 8, 1975, Wyckoff, New Jersey) is an American actress and model who has starred in films such as American Pie (1999) and Dr. T & the Women. Background

She was born in New York City, the eldest of four children of Richard Hilton and Kathy Richards. Her younger sister is Nicky Hilton, and her younger brothers are Barron Hilton and Conrad Hilton.

On the maternal side of her family, Hilton is a niece of two popular child stars of the 1970s, Kim Richards and Kyle Richards, who appeared in the motion picture Escape to Witch Mountain and TV shows like Nanny and the Professor, Little House on the Prairie, and later, ER. By marriage, she also is related to Zsa Zsa Gabor (the Hungarian-born actress who married Paris Hilton's great-grandfather Conrad Hilton) as well as Elizabeth Taylor (the actress's first husband was Paris Hilton's great-uncle, Conrad Nicholson Hilton Jr.).

Her paternal grandparents are hotel chairman Barron Hilton and his wife, the former Marilyn Hawley, and her paternal great-grandparents were Hilton Hotel founder Conrad Hilton and his first wife, Mary Barron. When Conrad Hilton died in 1979, he left nothing in his will to his children or other descendants. Barron Hilton contested this decision and won in 1988. According to Forbes magazine in 2005, the net worth of Barron Hilton is estimated at just over US $1 billion, of which Paris is expected to inherit a little over US $50 million.

Hilton moved between several exclusive homes in her youth, including a suite in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, and the Hamptons. Currently, her parents own a $10 million mansion in Bel Air, a $6.3 million estate in the Hamptons, as well as $3 million house in the Hollywood Hills in which she and her sister stay to give them privacy and easy access to LA clubs.

After attending high school at the Dwight School in New York, but dropping out and eventually earning a GED, Hilton decided not to attend a university. Instead, she worked as a fashion model for Catherine Malandrino and Marc Bouwer, and on an ad campaign for Italian label Iceberg. She appeared in cameo roles in Zoolander (2001), The Cat in the Hat (2003) and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! (2004).

What really shot Hilton to prominence was a sex video of her with her then-boyfriend Rick Salomon, which was leaked onto the Internet shortly after The Simple Life debuted, causing a sensation. On June 9, 2004 it was released as a DVD titled 1 Night in Paris which was hosted by Salomon. Hilton sued Salomon for releasing the tape, but the suit was settled, with Hilton receiving US $400,000 and a percentage of the profits.

Model, actress, entrepreneur

In recent years Hilton has gained recognition by appearing in television, movies, commercials, and modeling. According to Forbes magazine, in 2003-2004 she earned approximately US$2 million for her television and movie roles, but in 2004-2005 her earnings from television, movies, modeling, and personal appearances have earned her an additional $6.5 million. During this period Forbes Magazine has ranked Hilton as one of the top 100 celebrities in the world.

She also appeared in the short subjects QIK2JDG and L.A. Knights, as well as minor and supporting roles in the feature movies House of Wax, The Hillz, Wonderland, Uptown Girls, Raising Helen and Nine Lives. She landed her first lead role in a theatrical release with National Lampoon's Pledge This! (2005).

Hilton and Nicole Richie (daughter of Lionel) starred in the 2003 FOX hit reality series The Simple Life, in which they lived with a family on their farm in rural Altus, Arkansas. Highlights of the show included the girls performing poorly at various jobs, making out with the local boys, and numerous instances of them shown as "fish out of water." On March 19, 2004, Hilton suffered a horseback riding accident while filming The Simple Life 2, requiring treatment at a hospital. Following the success of the first season of the show, Hilton is now being paid around US$3 million per season.

In April 2005, however, Hilton announced that she severed both personal and professional ties with Richie. Neither party has commented on the reason why, though Hilton has alluded that it is due to actions on the part of Richie. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Hilton hosted a party to watch her performance as host of Saturday Night Live, but that Richie switched the SNL tape with a tape of Hilton's infamous sex video.

Paris Hilton parodied on the satirical cartoon, South Park.She was also the subject of a negative South Park episode entitled "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset" in which she opens a store called "Stupid Spoiled Whore" selling girls everything they need to emulate her.

In November 2004, Hilton participated in Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' Vote or Die campaign, to encourage youths to vote in the Presidential election. She drew criticism when it was revealed she did not vote, nor had she even registered to do so. Ironically, she would somewhat fulfill her theoretical obligation to "die" when the promoters of her film, House of Wax, employed a notorious "See Paris die" advertisement campaign, highlighting the death scene of her character in the film.

On top of her acting career, she has also helped to design purses for Samantha Thavasa and Toys for Tots, and has created her own jewelry line for Amazon.com. Currently, her design work earns around US$250,000 per year.

She is the founder of Heiress Records, a label on which she plans to release her debut album in 2006, tentatively titled Paris is Burning. Her first single entitled 'Screwed' has been leaked to the Internet and has been remixed by Alex G. Her producer for the album will be Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Go's. Hilton will also be working with Scott Storch. She will be covering Blondie's hit 'Heart of Glass' for her album. She describes the album as pop, rock and hip hop, she says it sounds like Blondie and Madonna.

Celebrity

Hilton and her sister, Nicki, are known for their jet-set lifestyles. Paris in particular has been trying to build herself into a marketable brand much like Donald Trump, claiming she must be regarded as a role model.

She has been widely discussed by tabloids. In 2000, the National Enquirer reported a casual friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio as something far more intimate. She has, however, also been linked with others young guys too, including actor Edward Furlong, boxer Oscar De La Hoya, model Jason Shaw, Chicago Bears football player Brian Urlacher, and singers Rob Mills, Deryck Whibley, and Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. While Hilton was dating Carter, she sported bruises, which caused rumors that Carter may have beat her. This rumor was neither confirmed nor denied by Hilton at the time. A few months later, she announced that those "bruises" were from a magazine photo shoot (just when the magazine was coming out.) She was, for this reason, blamed by the press.

Hilton has also received some gossip attention for a variety of other incidents, mainly party antics. She has been said to have pushed in front of others in line for a public bathroom, saying she only wanted to look at herself in the mirror. She has reportedly danced on the top of bar banquettes, worn shirts reading "Got Blow?," and other times worn no top at all. One of her more famous quotes is: "What's a soup kitchen?" Hilton received an offer from the U.S. version of the reality TV show "Big Brother" to participate in their show. Rumors said she has been offered more than US$1.8 million. If she will agree to be in the reality-show, “she will join a bizarre band of ex-strippers, beauty queens, a married couple and a virgin, who are living under 24 hour scrutiny on the set".

Paris has also been featured in several television commercials including a T-Mobile commercial for which she was paid $250,000 and her Carl's Jr. commercial (see more below) for which she was paid $400,000 according to Forbes Magazine.

In the fall of 2004, Hilton released a book, Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose, which brings full color photographs of her and gives her tips on the dos and don'ts of living as an heiress. Hilton was reportedly given a $100,000 advanced payment for this book. Some in the media panned the writing as amateurish, and the book was parodied by Robert Mundell on The Late Show with David Letterman. Still, it became a New York Times bestseller.

Hacked address book

On February 19, 2005, the contents of Hilton's personal T-Mobile account were posted to the Internet. They included phone numbers (which included many celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Fred Durst, Eminem, Lindsay Lohan, Alsou, Jay-Z, Anna Kournikova, Snoop Dogg, Andy Roddick, Benjie Paras, Avril Lavigne, Frankie Muniz, Ashlee Simpson, Jerry Yan), notes (with even more numbers and email addresses and reminders such as her date to host Saturday Night Live), and thirty-five digital snapshots. In two of the leaked photos, Hilton is standing topless next to the MTV Latin America's VJ Eglantina Zingg, whom she kisses. This further added to the speculation that Hilton might be gay or bisexual. Many of her notes showed heavy usage of Internet slang.

Within days, it was revealed that Hilton's account could be accessed by anyone guessing the answer to the "forgotten password" challenge question she chose: "What is your favorite pet's name?" As the answer to this question is a matter of public record, an anonymous party was able to guess it and notify the press.

In September, it was reported that a 17-year old teenager in Massachusetts, known by his online alias Cam0, plead guilty to accessing Hilton's account and making bomb threats. He was sentenced to 11 months in a juvenile detention center and prohibited from using computers or other devices that can connect to the internet for two years.

"That's hot!"

"That's hot!" is a phrase used by Hilton (although an earlier usage is attributed to her Simple Life co-star Nicole Richie [10] and has been used by others for many years). The catch phrase, a synonym for "That's cool" or "That's awesome," has since been parodied in pop culture outlets such as Saturday Night Live and even by Hilton herself, on The Late Show with David Letterman.

In 2004, Hilton filed a successful request to trademark the phrase. She wishes to market clothing with the phrase prominently emblazoned on the garments; she felt it was time to trademark the phrase because "I've been saying it forever. I want to put it on T-shirts and stuff like that."

Advertisement controversy

Another controversy involving Hilton was her appearance in a Carl's Jr. television advertisement, originally broadcast in May 2005. In the commercial, which introduces the restaurant's "Spicy BBQ Six Dollar Burger", Hilton wears a provocative swimsuit and soaps up a Bentley automobile and herself before taking a big bite out of the burger.

This has drawn criticism from television watchdog groups, including the Parents Television Council. The research director for the PTC, Melissa Caldwell, says; "This commercial is basically soft-core porn. The way she moves, the way she puts her finger in her mouth - it's very suggestive and very titillating." The Los Angeles, California based group says they plan to mobilize their more than 1 million members to contact the restaurant chain and voice their concern.

Andy Puzder, CEO of Carl's Jr., says the group needs to "get a life... This isn't Janet Jackson; there is no nipple in this. There is no nudity, there is no sex acts; it's a beautiful model in a swimsuit washing a car." Puzder was referring to the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy. According to Forbes Magazine, Carl's Jr. paid Hilton $400,000 for filming in this commercial.

FOX News host Bill O'Reilly speculated that Hilton did not in fact eat the burgers she endorsed and was therefore dishonest, inviting her to come on his show The O'Reilly Factor and eat one of the burgers on the air, thus proving him wrong. Hilton has not thus far acknowledged the invitation.

In addition to featuring the ad on their website, Carl's Jr. has also built a separate site to play a longer version of the commercial. A similar ad with Hilton for Hardee's hamburger chain (also owned by Carl's Jr. parent corporation CKE Restaurants) is expected to air June 2005.

Before this deal with Carl's Jr., Hilton lost out on a $750,000 multi-commercial deal with Burger King because the company did not feel her sexy image was a good fit with their brand.

Perfume & Cologne

In early May of 2004, Parlux Fragrances (who have made fragrances for Guess, Perry Ellis, XOXO) announced that they would be releasing a fragrance line created by Hilton. The perfume would be aptly named "Paris Hilton". The scent was described as "a brilliant flirtatious charm, this head-turning fragrance can be dressed up or down for both day and evening wear." The scent consists of "an ethereal halo with delicious notes of frozen Apple and juicy Peach Nectar wrapped with sparkling Muguet and a splash of wet Ozone. A luminous bouquet of sensual floralcy is at the heart of this fragrance. Delicate Mimosa Blossoms are entwined with sheer Freesia and Night-Blooming Jasmine petals, while heady, rich Tuberose provides depth and texture."

The perfume launch was a success. Originally set to be a small release , demand became popular and they had a wide release before Christmas of 2004. The launch was a big part of the Parlux stock increasing 30%. Ilia Lekach, a CEO at Parlux, said "I am delighted with our record performance and I’m optimistic regarding results through the end of our fiscal year. We have recently commenced shipments of our Paris Hilton fragrance which has surpassed our expectations."

After the success of Hilton's perfume, Parlux Fragrances had her create Paris Hilton for Men, a cologne that has a "sensual aura." The packaging states : "Paris Hilton knows how she likes a man to smell, so she has created a scent to share with her male admirers around the world." The colgone is available at Lazarus-Macy's. Sales reports are not available.

On South Park, she has a perfume dubbed Skanque.

Engagement

Although she has been linked to many other famous men, on May 29, 2005 it was announced that she was to marry her boyfriend of five months, Paris Latsis, son of Gregory Kasidokostas and Mariana Latsis, a Greek shipping heir.

Criticism

There have been arguments that Hilton is a "good for nothing" celebrity, and that her appearances in films and on TV are "phony" and aimed at promoting herself. Some critics, however, have given her credit for her work in modeling (before 2001, when she became a public figure) and dramatic ability, and consider Hilton's carefully crafted image to be the reason for her success. The only thing that both the critics and public credit her for doing is 'Opening the doors for other rich girls or "heiresses" wanting to be famous.'

Patricia Heaton (born March 4, 1958) is an American actress best known for playing Debra Barone on the television sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

Heaton was born in Bay Village, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of well-known Cleveland Plain Dealer sportswriter Chuck Heaton. Her mother died when she was a small child. She moved to New York City to study with drama teacher William Esper after graduating from The Ohio State University.

Heaton made her Broadway debut in the musical Don't Get God Started, after which she and fellow students created Stage Three, an off-Broadway acting troupe. When they brought one of their productions to Los Angeles, Heaton caught the eye of a casting director for the ABC drama thirtysomething, in which she played an oncologist, leading to three appearances on the series. She was featured in three unsuccessful sitcoms - Room for Two (1992) with Linda Lavin, Someone Like Me (1994), and Women of the House (1995) with Delta Burke - before landing the plum role of beleaguered wife, mother, and in-law Debra Barone in Everybody Loves Raymond (1996 - 2005) with Ray Romano, Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, Brad Garrett, and Monica Horan. Since 1999, she has been nominated every year for an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy, winning the award twice. She has also collected two Viewers for Quality Television awards and a Screen Actors Guild trophy for her work on the series.

Heaton's television movies include Shattered Dreams, Miracle in the Woods, A Town Without Christmas, as well as the remake of Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl with Jeff Daniels, and The Engagement Ring, both for TNT. Her feature films include Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Beethoven, and Space Jam.

Biography

Cook was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Thomas Howard Cook and JoAnne Maria Mozzone (an Italian American). She began working as a print model at the age of 10, most notably in nationwide advertisements for Target and appearing on the boxes of Milk-Bone dog biscuits for medium sized dogs.

At 14, Cook began auditioning for acting work. Her modeling agency sent her to read for a short film, 26 Summer Street (1996). She first gained national attention when she was featured in the memorable This is Your Brain on Drugs public-service television advertisement. Success in the acting profession followed quickly and she debuted in The Baby-Sitters Club (1995).

Her two biggest roles to date have been the leads in She's All That (1999) and Josie and the Pussycats (2001). Cook has also appeared in a number of independent films and in the 2005 television miniseries Into the West.

She owns her own production company called Ben's Sister Productions, the name of which is a reference to her younger brother, Ben, who is an aspiring filmmaker.

After becoming engaged in December 2003, she married actor Daniel Gillies in August 2004.

She married actor John Stamos on September 19, 1998. During her marriage, she used the name Rebecca Romijn-Stamos in both her personal and professional life. The couple announced their separation on April 12, 2004 and divorced on March 1, 2005. She has returned to using her birth name. On September 20, 2005, Romijn's publicist confirmed her engagement to Jerry O'Connell .

Lucy Lawless (born Lucille Frances Ryan on March 29, 1968 in Auckland, New Zealand), is a Kiwi actress and singer best known for her role as Xena on the television series Xena: Warrior Princess from 1995 to 2001.

Lucy was born the fifth child of Frank and Julie Ryan. She discovered an enjoyment of acting in high school. At Auckland University, she studied foreign languages for a year. She then left for Europe with her boyfriend to travel around Germany and Switzerland. They went back and landed a job with a mining company in Australia. In 1988, Lucy and Garth Lawless were married. They returned to New Zealand and had a daughter, Daisy.

She had a guest role in 1990 on New Zealand TV series Shark in the Park, around the same time compatriot Karl Urban appeared.

Vanessa Angel was supposed to play a new character, the villainess Xena, in an en episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, but became sick and was unable to travel to New Zealand. Lucy had previously played two different characters in Hercules, so the directors chose her as a replacement (though Lucy's hair had to be dyed to distinquish her from the previous, unrelated characters). Under the 5'10 1/2" Lucy, Xena's character became popular, so she started to redeem herself and got her own her series, Xena: Warrior Princess. The show was a hit, lasting six seasons.

A testament to the popularity of Xena: Warrior Princess is that Lawless is a universally recognized celebrity even though she has not had a single great success outside of it. She was even immortalized as a character on The Simpsons (playing a super-powered, flying version of herself).

She would later be named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People magazine in 1997.

She has since appeared in the Vagina Monologues, on the first two episodes of the ninth season of The X-Files, and in the short-lived (eight episodes) television series Tarzan. She has had brief appearances in the movies Eurotrip, Spider-Man, and the horror film Boogeyman. Her next role was on TV battling bugs in her new TV-movie Locusts!.

Lucy Lawless as fleet reporter D'anna Biers on Battlestar Galactica.Recently, Lawless has taken on a recurring role on the Battlestar Galactica television series. She plays a D'anna Biers, a reporter with a secret agenda who works on a critical documentary about the crew of the Galactica (and who in secret is actually a Cylon humanoid robot that has infiltrated the ship to help bring about its destruction).

Lucy and Garth were divorced in 1995. She married the executive producer of Xena, Robert G. Tapert, in 1998. The couple had a son in 1999 named Julius Robert Bay Tapert. Kelly Kamalelehua Palzis (born October 13, 1962 in Honolulu, Hawaii) is an American actress.

Preston had a modeling career when she was a teenager. At 16, she was discovered by a fashion photographer who helped her get acting work in commercials and other small parts, which eventually developed into a successful movie career.

Preston has been married to John Travolta since 1991. Preston put her career on hold after the wedding, opting to be a wife and mother when Travolta's career took off again in the 1990s. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter; she also has a son by her first marriage to actor Kevin Gage. Kelly does not use the surname "Travolta" professionally.

Both Preston and Travolta are Scientologists, and Preston appeared in the film Battlefield Earth (produced by John Travolta, based on the novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard). Her role is sometimes incorrectly described as "starring" even though she only appears in one scene. She plays a Psychlo female encountered in a bar (possibly a prostitute) whose primary talent is implied to be fellatio.

Recently, she has taken up the issue of overmedication and children. In keeping with Scientology precepts, Preston believes that schools are forcing or pressuring students and their families to medicate them for ADD unnecessarily. She has testified before the Florida state legislature encouraging the passage of a bill to ban such practice. While there is already a federal law to that effect, only schools receiving federal funding are subject to its terms.

She also devotes much of her time as a board member of the Children's Health Environmental Coalition (CHEC), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating parents about environmental toxins and potential health hazards for children with illnesses. She joined after their son Jett was diagnosed with Kawasaki syndrome, an illness that mostly affects children and results in severe allergies and asthma attacks.

Trivia

Preston's former boyfriends include George Clooney and Charlie Sheen. After living with Sheen for one year (and receiving a very large diamond ring from him), Preston ended the relationship in 1990 shortly after an incident in which Sheen accidentally shot her in the arm.

John Travolta married Kelly Preston twice. Their first wedding (September 5, 1991) was performed by a French Scientologist minister, but it was later declared illegal. They married again within the month.

In 2004, Kelly Preston was featured in the chart-topping Maroon 5 music video, "She Will Be Loved". The video features a dangerous love triangle and some steamy romantic scenes between Preston and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

Early career

Russell first found her way onto television as a cast member of the New Mickey Mouse Club variety show on the Disney Channel. She was on the show from 1991 to 1993, with her final year seeing the introduction of soon-to-be pop singers Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.

Appearances

Several appearances on film and TV followed, with one of her most significant pre-Felicity roles coming in the 1996's The Babysitter's Seduction. However, it was a fairly stereotypical TV movie, with melodramatic overtones. She had a role in the shortlived soap opera series Malibu Shores the same year. Russell also had an appearance on Jon Bon Jovi's music video "Always" with Jack Noseworthy.

Television

A major attraction for many fans of the actress is her (usually) long and curly hair. A drastic hairstyle change at the beginning of Felicity's second season was considered to be the cause of a significant drop in the show's ratings. This reportedly led to a new policy at The WB where major changes in appearance by on-screen talent must be approved by the network.

Major roles

The filming of Felicity had left Russell somewhat drained, so she went on hiatus when the series ended and considered quitting acting. Her next role was as part of the Mel Gibson-led bio-pic We Were Soldiers in 2002, where she played the wife of an American serviceman who became involved in the first major battle between U.S. and Viet Cong forces in the Vietnam War. After that, she moved to New York City and took about two years to avoid the business of Hollywood, spending time with friends.

Broadway

The actress made her Broadway stage debut in 2004, appearing with Jeremy Piven, Andrew McCarthy, and Ashlie Atkinson in Neil LaBute's Fat Pig. In 2005 she returned to television and film, first with an appearance in the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie Magic of Ordinary Days. In theatrical release was The Upside of Anger, where she appeared alongside Kevin Costner and Joan Allen. She will be in the mid-year miniseries Into the West.

Felicity co-stars

A number of her Felicity co-stars went on to appear in J.J. Abrams's next TV series, Alias, but Russell has declined invitations to be part of the show. In a seminar at the Museum of Television and Radio, Abrams said, "I've asked Keri if she would ever do it [Alias], and I usually get this, sort of like, giggle—and then she hangs up." In 2005, he asked her to join the cast of Mission: Impossible III, and she accepted. The film is due for release in 2006.

Jennifer Anne Garner (born April 17, 1972 in Houston, Texas) is an American film and television actress.

Biography

Garner was born to Patricia Ann English (a teacher) and Billy Jack Garner, an engineer whose job with Union Carbide forced the family to relocate to Charleston, West Virginia when Jennifer was three years old, where she remained until college. Jennifer studied ballet for nine years before enrolling at Denison University to study chemical engineering. Upon the realization that she loved the stage more than engineering she changed her major to drama.

She currently stars as the character Sydney Bristow on the TV show Alias.

Garner enjoys cooking, gardening, hiking and kickboxing (a hobby inspired by her character on Alias). She is a graduate of George Washington High School in Charleston, West Virginia (1990).

In 2005, Garner entered the Forbes Power 100 List of celebrities. Garner ranked as the 5th best paid actress in Hollywood, accumulating an estimated US$14 million over the year 2004/05. She came 8th behind Cameron Diaz in the power rankings.

Garner is known for performing her own stunts, and in January 2005 she was forced to bow out of some publicity duties for her film Elektra due to what was first thought to have been a viral infection. During her first nomination in 2002, she was expected by many people to win but lost out to "The West Wing"'s Allison Janney. The year of her second nomination, she lost to Edie Falco for her powerful performance in "The Sopranos." For Garner's third nomination, she again lost out to Janney. The most recent nomination in 2005 was not met with a win as "Medium"'s Patricia Arquette won.

She has received four consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama, and won once. She won on her first nomination, which was in January of 2002. "Alias" had just begun a few months ago, meaning Garner beat the other nominees even though only half the season (roughly 11 or twelve episodes) had aired.

She won the Actor Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 2005. The category had only five nominees and is composed of all actresses in any dramatic roles, both lead and supporting.

Relationships

Interestingly, all of Garner's relationships are with her on-screen love interests, with whom she played. In 2000, Garner married Scott Foley, who played with her on the television show Felicity. The two later separated and subsequently filed for divorce in 2003. She then dated her Alias co-star Michael Vartan until mid-2004, when she started dating her Daredevil co-star Ben Affleck. Nevertheless, Garner and Vartan remained close friends.

Garner has since been together with Affleck, a relationship which has garnered significant media attention. On May 7, 2005 E! News reported that multiple sources close to Garner confirmed that she was pregnant. On June 30, 2005 publicists for both Affleck and Garner confirmed that the couple married the day before at the Parrot Cay resort in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean, and that Garner is pregnant with her first child, a girl due in November. On September 27, 2005, on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Garner "accidently" referred to her unborn child as "she," acknowledging that she and her husband are expecting a girl. Although there has been rumors that she may has gaven birth already on Thanksgiving or on Black Friday.

Her pregnancy has been incorporated into her hit ABC show Alias. Garner is expected to be absent from several episodes that will be produced around and after the birth; as a result, the series added a new, Sydney Bristow-like character to the series that will take up the reins while Garner is indisposed.

Gillian Leigh Anderson (born August 9, 1968) is an American actress, best known for her role as FBI Agent Dana Scully in the American TV series The X-Files.

Life and career

She was born in Chicago to Edward and Rosemary Anderson; soon after her birth her family moved to Puerto Rico for fifteen months and then to Crouch End in London. When she was eleven, her family moved again, this time to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she attended City Middle/High School, a program for gifted students with a strong emphasis on the humanities. With her English accent and background, she felt out of place in the American Midwest, and developed a reputation as a strong-willed and rebellious teenager. She had her nose pierced in the early 1980s, dyed her hair various colors, and was once arrested for gluing the locks of the school closed.

She found an outlet for her talents when she began acting in high school and community theater productions. She attended Goodman Theater School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990.

Following some professional stage work, she "broke into" television. In 1993, she had a guest appearance on the collegiate drama Class of '96 on the fledgling Fox Network, and auditioned for the role of Dana Scully on The X-Files. There she met assistant art director Clyde Klotz, whom she married and with whom she had a daughter, Piper Maru, in 1994. (An alien-abduction storyline explained her brief absence from the series for delivery.) Anderson and Klotz later divorced. She had roles in a handful of films during the run of The X-Files and starred in The House of Mirth, an adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel of the same name.

Since The X-Files ended, she has performed in several stage productions and worked on various film projects. She has also done narrative work for documentaries on scientific topics, in which the voice listeners recognize as "Agent Scully" lends an air of credible authority to the material. In 2005 she appeared as Lady Dedlock in a BBC television adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel Bleak House and she recently completed work on a film version of the novel Tristram Shandy, due to be released later in the year. In December 2004, Anderson married longtime partner Julian Ozanne, a documentary filmmaker, on Lamu's island of Shella, off the coast of Africa.

Goldie Jeanne Hawn (born Goldie Jean Studlendgehawn on November 21, 1945 in Washington, D.C.) is a Jewish–American actress who began her career as one of the regular cast members on the 1960s sketch comedy show Laugh-In. Noted equally for her chipper attitude and her bikini and painted body, she personified a 1960s It girl. On the show she would often break out into high-pitched giggles in the middle of a joke, yet in the next moment deliver a very polished performance. Hawn won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1969 film Cactus Flower, which co-starred the now-deceased acting legends, Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman.

Into the 1970s and 1980s Hawn remained a popular figure in entertainment, appearing in various films (generally comedies), and moving into film production, as well. She gathered great respect as a comedy actress, and was outspoken in her liberal political views. Her career died down a bit until 1992 when she revitalized it opposite Bruce Willis and Meryl Streep in the film Death Becomes Her. She also played an aging actress in the late 1990s film The First Wives Club opposite Bette Midler and Diane Keaton. Through the late 1990s and beyond, she has remained popular (in part thanks to the success of her now adult daughter, actress Kate Hudson, whose father is the musician Bill Hudson). She appeared in The Banger Sisters opposite Susan Sarandon in 2002. Her son Oliver Hudson is also an actor, appearing on the short-lived 2004-2005 (WB) television series The Mountain (television series).

She has been in a relationship with Kurt Russell since 1983, and they have a son together, Wyatt Russell, who is now in Vancouver, British Columbia learning and playing hockey. Hawn became a grandmother on 7 January 2004 when her daughter Kate Hudson gave birth to son Ryder Russell Robinson.

Hawn's father, whose family had been in the U.S. for several hundred years, was a Presbyterian; her mother was the daughter of Jewish immigrants from Hungary and Hawn was raised Jewish. Nowadays, Hawn is a practising Buddhist, but still considers herself Jewish, and has raised her children, including actress Kate Hudson, in both the Jewish and Buddhist beliefs.

Her father, Edward Rutledge Studlendgehawn, was a descendant of Edward Rutledge, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence (United States).

Hawn has proved her singing talent with a cover version of the Beatles' song "A Hard Day's Night" on George Martin's album In My Life (1998) and, along with Diane Keaton and Bette Midler, in covering the Lesley Gore hit "You Don't Own Me" for The First Wives Club in 1996.

She has written an autobiography called A Lotus Grows in the Mud (2005) which Hawn claims is not a Hollywood tell-all, but rather a memoir and record of what she has learned in her life so far.

Personal life

Paltrow was born in Los Angeles to the late Bruce Paltrow (a Jewish American film director) and Blythe Danner (a well known Quaker character actress of part Pennsylvania Dutch descent). Raised in Santa Monica, she attended Spence School, a selective private girls' school in New York City, and briefly studied Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before dropping out and committing herself to acting. Paltrow has a younger brother named Jake and is a cousin of actress Katherine Moennig.

In May of 2005 she publicly announced that she suffered from depression after the untimely death of her father Bruce Paltrow.

She is a vegetarian and a good friend of both Madonna and Christina Applegate, but she earned the enmity of Sharon Stone due to her performance as Stone in a Saturday Night Live skit that poked fun at Stone and her then-husband, Phil Bronstein.

She had a much-publicized romance with Brad Pitt and was also once linked romantically to Ben Affleck.

On December 5, 2003, she married Chris Martin of the rock group Coldplay in secret. Paltrow gave birth to their first child, Apple Blythe Alison Martin, on May 14, 2004. She has been quoted as saying she chose the name Apple because it was "the sweetest, loveliest name." In October 2005, her mother hinted that Gwyneth may be pregnant with the couple's second child; however, neither Gwyneth nor her husband have so far commented on this.

Acting career

Her debut film was Shout (1991), and later the same year she played in family friend Steven Spielberg's Hook (1991). She later starred in Se7en (1995), dating her co-star Brad Pitt.

Her performance in Emma (1996) received its share of praise. She was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actress two years later for her performance in Shakespeare in Love (1998), in which Affleck appeared. She has since had a steady film career, with a few notable film roles, including Proof (2005) and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001).
